HighNESS
HighNESS aims to massively expand the scientific potential of the world’s most powerful neutron facility—the European Spallation Source (ESS).
Design a new second source of cold neutrons, based on the latest scientific research as well as new theory and experiments
Design additional secondary sources, where necessary, for even colder (very cold and ultra-cold) neutrons
Design a new advanced reflector to transmit these neutrons to the scientific instruments with the highest intensity
Tailor the above designs for maximal application in materials science and fundamental physics
Share any new understanding with the greater scientific community according to “FAIR” principles
Drawing input from eight European research institutions, and with a budget of €3m over three years from the EU’s Horizon 2020 programme, the project will produce a groundbreaking design for a second source of ESS neutrons.
As a result, it will show how the ESS can be not only the most brilliant neutron source in the world, but also the most intense, able to probe everyday materials and tackle fundamental questions in physics with up to 1,000 times the sensitivity found anywhere else.
